COMMON OCTOPUS

Towards the end of May, my brother and I found ourselves diving at Porthkerris in Cornwall. We had heard that Common Octopus had been found there so decided it was worth a shot.

Diving multiple times a day we managed to find at least 1 Octopus on each dive. We would watch as the Octopus crawled and swam its way around patch of kelp, hunting. Halfway through our first dive we found a second Octopus swimming along that came to join us. It sat a couple meters away watching us.

During our time there we returned to the same spot as it seemed to have a handful of Octopus hanging around.

Recently there has been a bloom of Octopus across the Southwest coast. Many fishing lobster and crab pots have been left empty. One reason that could be the cause is a recent rise in water temperature. On our dives we recorded temperatures of 16°C.
